What is Form I-485?

Form I-485 (Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status) is the application for obtaining permanent resident status (green card) without leaving the United States. This process is called Adjustment of Status (AOS). Current form edition: 01/20/25. Older versions are rejected by USCIS starting April 2026.

Who Can File I-485

Immediate Relatives of US Citizens (spouses IR-1, children under 21 IR-2, parents IR-5) — visas always available, no waiting required.

Family Preference Categories F1–F4 — must wait for priority date per Visa Bulletin.

Employment Categories EB-1 (extraordinary ability), EB-2, EB-3 — need approved I-140 petition and current priority date.

After Asylum — 1 year after receiving asylum status.

Refugees — 1 year after arrival in the USA.

Special Categories: VAWA, T/U visas, special immigrants, DV lottery, etc.

Required: physical presence in USA and lawful entry (inspection).

Required Forms

  • I-485 (edition 01/20/25) — main application. Current version only!
  • I-693 — medical exam from civil surgeon, required at filing.
  • I-765 (optional) — work permit, recommended to file simultaneously.
  • I-131 (optional) — Advance Parole for travel abroad.
  • I-864 — Affidavit of Support for family categories.
  • G-1450 or G-1650 — payment form (checks and money orders not accepted since Oct 2025).
  • G-1145 — recommended for electronic filing notifications.

Step-by-Step Process

  1. Prepare all forms and documents 2. Complete medical exam with civil surgeon (get sealed I-693 envelope) 3. Pay USCIS fees via G-1450 or G-1650 4. Submit complete package to USCIS lockbox 5. Receive Receipt Notice (I-797C) — save it! 6. Complete biometrics appointment (fingerprints) 7. Receive EAD/AP (5-8 months) 8. Wait for interview notice 9. Attend interview 10. Receive green card by mail (2-4 weeks after approval)

  • Children under 14: $950
